What is a glow plug and why do diesel engines need it?

Glow plugs heat the combustion chamber to aid cold starting in diesel engines. Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines rely on compression ignition, which requires sufficient chamber temperature. Without glow plugs, cold-weather starting becomes difficult.

How long do glow plugs last?

Most glow plugs last 100,000-160,000 km, though this varies by driving conditions. Signs of failure include hard starting, white smoke on cold start, and rough idle at startup.

Is the BERU GN107 an OEM part?

BERU is a Mitsubishi subsidiary specializing in ignition and glow plug technology. The GN107 is an OEM-equivalent or OEM part depending on the specific diesel engine manufacturer.

Will this glow plug fit my engine?

The 14mm thread size (M10x1.0) is common in many diesel engines. Verify your engine's glow plug specifications before ordering to ensure compatibility.

How do I know if my glow plugs need replacement?

Symptoms include extended cranking time, white exhaust smoke on startup, misfiring, and difficulty starting in cold weather. Professional diagnostic tools can also test glow plug resistance.

What does 120W mean on the glow plug?

The 120W rating indicates the electrical power consumed by the glow plug during preheating. Higher wattage generates more heat for quicker combustion chamber warming.

Can I install this glow plug myself?

Glow plug replacement is a relatively simple DIY task for most diesel vehicles, requiring basic hand tools and a socket. Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first.
